Lake rules & boating safety
- Registration & boater ed: motorized vessels, jet skis included, follow Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) rules.
- Idle speed / no wake: strictly enforced in canals, near bridges and ramps, and near docks or anchored boats.
- Life jackets: one wearable USCG-approved PFD per person. Children under 6 must wear one while underway.
- Canal locks: on the Winter Haven Chain, follow the lock operator's signals and enter at idle speed.

That's one of the most common questions I hear. Polk County is beautiful in every season, and life on the lake doesn't pause when summer ends.
Fall
Warm days, cooler evenings and ideal conditions for fishing tournaments and lakeside dining. The humidity drops and dock sunsets get spectacular.
Winter
Mild, dry and sunny. Prime season for boating, golf and kayaking without the summer heat.
